The truth is not neccesarily correct when it comes down to photo journalism. The photographer will take their pictures a couple of seconds before something happens but people thought a photo would never lie. I personally feel that it is about capturing an unexpected moment which makes people looking at the picture astounded.
The difference between photo journalism and pictures in a magazine these days is the fact that these days most of the pictures are fake. For example, a celebrity in a magazine will be airbrushed to make their body look smaller. People believe that it is a gift to be able to catch something so unexpected and memorable. The moment when that picture occurs is when you have captured that decisive moment.
In those days, some photographers use to use cameras called Leica's. These cameras were extremely useful as they were small enough to fit in your pocket and then when your moment comes you can quickly grab your camera and take the photo. The picture below shows what one of the Leica cameras looked like.
Context
In photo journalism, the photos are normally displayed in black and white unlike today since we have colour. I feel this is to make the photo look more elegant and sophisticated. We look at the images quite astounded by them as it is usually an unexpected moment. Whats good about it is the photo is generally better than most photos taken today. It looks like the photographer has put alot of effort into making the scene that is shot look great but really it is effortless. The photographer will prey on a certain area that they would like to take a photo and hope that something may happen. I feel that these photos could also be displayed in places like museums or maybe some old news articles.
Techniques
The photo has been taken at that exact moment but i dont feel that the original photograph is black and white, so i feel they edited that. Its like what I said earlier, the black and white is to show sophistication. Nowadays you can edit and put items or anything in a photo.
